Odd jobs are the work most people put off for a year. A door that scrapes the frame every winter, a drawer that won't close, caulking gone black around the tub, a towel bar hanging on by hope and one screw. None of it is an emergency, so it sits — and the list gets longer until it's not five things anymore, it's fifteen.
We take the whole list in one visit. Around Boston and Melrose that usually means working on plaster over hundred-year-old lath, framing that has settled a little every winter since it was built, and hardware that's been painted over three times by three different owners — so the "quick fix" a general contractor won't bother picking up the phone for is exactly what we're set up for. You point, we fix, we clean up, and we're not sighing about it being a small job.
Boston Handyman Co. is owner-operated out of Melrose — the person quoting the job is the person doing it. If you want a sense of who's behind the truck, the Melrose Chamber of Commerce is a good place to start.
Repairs and odd jobs are billed at $100 per hour with a one-hour minimum, and no trip fee anywhere in our service area. Most punch lists fit inside a single hour or two, and we'll tell you straight if something turns out to be a bigger job before we start.
Door Repair
Sticking doors, dropped hinges, latches that miss the strike plate, and closet doors off their track. In pre-1950 Boston and Melrose homes the frame has usually racked out of square after a century of freeze-thaw, so we plane, shim, and re-set the hardware instead of forcing it — the door that needs a specific shoulder-check to close is a symptom, not a personality trait. Caulking & Weatherproofing
Cracked tub and shower caulk, drafty windows and doors, gaps where cold air pours in all winter. Old triple-deckers and brownstones make that draft obvious fast once the freeze-thaw cycle sets in, so we strip the old bead, clean it right, and re-seal so it actually holds. Hardware & Fixture Swaps
Cabinet pulls, door knobs, towel bars, TP holders, house numbers, curtain hardware, smart locks. In a lot of older plaster walls the old towel bar was never anchored to anything but a cheap plastic sleeve, so small stuff has to be level and anchored into something solid, not just drywall. Here's how we handle hardware & fixture swaps in Boston.
Home Repairs FAQs
Is there a minimum charge?
Yes — one hour at $100. Most short lists still fit inside it, so bundle a few things into one visit and get more done for the same minimum.
Do you charge a trip or travel fee?
No trip fee anywhere in our service area around Melrose, Boston, and the North Shore.
Can you do a bunch of small things in one visit?
That's exactly what this service is for. Send your list when you book so we bring the right hardware — screws, anchors, shims, caulk — instead of making a second trip because we guessed wrong.
How do I know if my punch list is a $100 job or something bigger?
Tell us what's on it when you book and we'll give you a straight read before we show up. Most odd-jobs lists — a door, a few hardware swaps, a bead of caulk — fit in an hour or two. If something turns out to be a bigger repair once we're looking at it, we'll say so before we start billing for it.
Do I need to be home while you work?
Not necessarily, as long as we can get to the areas on your list and you're reachable by phone if something comes up. Plenty of Boston clients hand over a key or a code and get their list back done by the time they're home from work.
What if the job turns out to be more than an odd job?
We'll tell you honestly. A door that just needs planing is a repair; a frame that's rotted through is a different conversation. We're not going to bill you by the hour to fix something that needs to be replaced outright.
