Bad caulk is the small thing that turns into a big thing. A cracked bead around the tub lets water behind the tile, and a drafty window costs you all winter in a Boston heating bill. The failure is almost always prep — the last person caulked over grime or old silicone, so it never bonded. We strip it all the way back, clean and dry the joint, then lay a clean, tooled bead of the right sealant for the spot (mildew-resistant silicone in wet areas, paintable for trim).

Why did my last caulk job fail?
Almost always prep — the last person caulked over old sealant or grime, so it never bonded to the surface underneath. A bead of new caulk laid over an unclean joint looks fine for a month and then peels or cracks right along the seam.
Silicone or latex?
Mildew-resistant silicone in wet areas like tubs and showers, paintable latex caulk on trim and other gaps. Using the wrong one is a big reason re-caulk jobs fail fast — silicone doesn't take paint, and latex doesn't hold up to constant water.
Will this help my heating bill?
Sealing drafts around windows, doors, and trim is one of the cheapest efficiency wins in an old home. It won't replace a single-pane window, but it stops the specific problem of cold air finding every gap the old caulk and weatherstripping gave up on years ago.

How long does re-caulking or weatherproofing take to finish?
The work itself is usually done in the visit, but silicone caulk needs time to fully cure before it should get wet — typically a day before a light shower, longer before a full soak. We'll tell you the specific window for what we used.
Can I just caulk over the old bead myself?
You can, and plenty of people do, but it's the exact reason most DIY re-caulk jobs fail within a season — caulk doesn't bond to old caulk, grime, or soap scum, only to a clean, dry surface. Stripping the old bead all the way back is the unglamorous part that actually makes the new seal last.
