We match the texture so the patch does not stick out like a sore thumb, and on plaster-and-lath walls we anchor into the lath itself instead of just skimming mud over the crack, which is why the fix holds instead of reopening by spring. Drywall Installation
When you are closing up an old doorway, finishing a basement, or putting a wall back after a renovation, that is drywall installation. We hang it, tape it, mud it, and sand it smooth so it is ready to paint. New drywall in an old Boston home has to sit flush against plaster that is often a different thickness altogether, and that mismatch is the part DIY jobs get wrong most.
