A guy in Medford called us last spring. He had a hole in the hallway wall from moving a couch, another one where a doorknob had punched through, and a patch job somebody did years ago that had already cracked again. One visit, all of it fixed. That is most of our drywall work. It is not one big job, it is a few small ones that piled up.

We are a drywall contractor working all over Boston and the North Shore. Here is the thing people miss about drywall in this city: a lot of these older homes are not drywall at all. They are plaster over wood lath. If you patch plaster like it is regular drywall, it cracks again by winter. We know the difference and we fix it so it stays fixed. Below are the drywall jobs we get called for most.
Drywall Repair
Most calls start here. Nail holes, doorknob dents, water-damage patches, cracks that keep coming back in an old plaster wall. We match the texture so the patch does not stick out like a sore thumb, and on plaster-and-lath walls we fix it the right way so it holds. If your wall has a couple of problem spots, this is the fix. Drywall Installation
When you are closing up an old doorway, finishing a basement, or putting a wall back after a renovation, that is drywall installation. We hang it, tape it, mud it, and sand it smooth so it is ready to paint. New drywall in an old Boston home has to blend with what is already there, and that is the part DIY jobs get wrong. Here is more on our drywall installation work.
Door Repair
Doors that stick, doors that will not latch, hinges that sag, a door that swelled shut over a humid summer. Boston homes shift with the freeze and thaw, and doors are usually the first thing to act up. We rehang, plane, and adjust so the door swings and closes like it should. Often it comes with a drywall patch around the frame, so we knock both out at once. More on door repair.
This Old House has plenty of background on plaster-and-lath walls if you want to see why they behave differently than drywall. We are an owner-operated shop based in Melrose, the same community you will find in the Melrose Chamber of Commerce.
