Measure a window opening in a Victorian or a triple-decker at the top, the middle, and the bottom, and you will usually get three different numbers. A century of settling puts frames out of square, and factory blinds are cut assuming they are not.
Measuring Old Windows
Order an inside-mount blind from the top width alone and it either will not fit or it leaves a light gap running down one side. So we measure every opening at three points and size to the narrowest.
Inside or Outside Mount
Inside mounts also need enough frame depth for the headrail, which older sash windows do not always have. When the depth or the squareness is not there, an outside mount looks better and works better, and we will tell you that before you spend money on the wrong product.
The Measuring Is the Whole Job
This Old House has a good overview of a standard blind install if your openings are square. On an old window, the measuring is the whole job.
The drilling is the easy part, whether the frame is wood, plaster returns, or brick on a converted mill building.
Based in Melrose
We are a Melrose business, listed alongside our neighbors in the Melrose Chamber of Commerce directory. Blinds and shades are part of our mounting and installation services, and fall is our busiest season for them, so book ahead if you want the whole house done before the holidays.

Blinds & Shades FAQs
Should I choose inside or outside mount for an old window?
Inside mount looks cleaner but needs two things old windows often lack: enough frame depth for the headrail and a reasonably square opening. If your frame is shallow or badly out of square, an outside mount covers the whole opening and hides the crookedness. We check both before you order.
Do you supply the blinds or just install them?
Most customers order the blinds and we install them. If you are not sure what sizes to order, we can do a measuring visit first and give you the exact numbers for each opening, including which windows need inside versus outside mount.
My window frames are not square. Can blinds still fit?
Yes. We measure at three points, size to the narrowest, and shim the brackets so the blind hangs plumb even when the frame is not. On a badly racked opening we will recommend outside mount, because forcing an inside mount there leaves light gaps and scraping.
